This research analyzes the impact of sustainable tourism management on the cultural preservation of the Emberá communities of Panama, taking the Emberá Quera community of Gatuncillo as a case study. The study arises from the need to understand how community tourism practices can contribute to strengthening cultural identity, intergenerational transmission of ancestral knowledge, and local economic development without compromising the authenticity of indigenous traditions. Methodologically, the research adopted a mixed, correlational, and descriptive approach, using surveys, direct observation, and documentary review as the main data collection techniques. In addition, a reliability test was applied using Cronbach’s Alpha demonstrating high internal consistency of the instrument.
The findings show that sustainable tourism management strengthens cultural preservation through participatory practices, the valorization of intangible heritage, and the reinforcement of community identity. Challenges related to infrastructure, training, and community governance were also identified. The study concludes that sustainable tourism can become an effective mechanism for comprehensive development when managed from a participatory, culturally sensitive, and environmentally responsible approach.
