Abstract

Currently, it can be said that the documentary preservation of books, texts, and other original archives, along with their conversion into digital formats, represents one of the many challenges of today due to the accelerated evolution of information and the constant changes in emerging technologies. Over time, the conservation of invaluable information has shifted from traditional methods and systems carried on physical materials such as parchment and papyrus to digital forms of preservation supported by cloud storage systems, platforms, and institutions—particularly the National Archive of Panama and the National Library of Panama, both institutions dedicated to safeguarding numerous documents. This paper analyzes the evolution of these preservation practices, highlighting the importance of document digitization, the use of modern technological platforms, and the implementation of criteria such as the currency of information and secure access to reliable, well-supported sources, all of which ensure the authenticity, integrity, and accessibility of information over the long term. To meet this objective, a literature review was conducted covering scientific articles, institutional documents, and academic sources published primarily from 2020 onward. The results show that documentary preservation requires a combination of technological resources, institutional planning, and adaptive strategies capable of addressing the risks associated with outdated technological methods and the exponential growth of the Web. It is determined that the preservation of documentary heritage must integrate both the protection of original documents and the efficient management of their digital versions, in order to ensure that future generations have access to all information and data, allowing them to draw on this heritage to understand historical events and cultures.
