Through the development of science, technology, and innovation (STI), humanity has made significant strides across various fields of knowledge. This has fostered substantial improvements in nutrition, health, education, and trade. While these developments are encouraging, the reality of the agricultural sector presents a starkly different picture, as it continues to face challenges such as climate change, food security, the protection of biodiversity within agroecosystems, and the need for responsible production and consumption—issues that are increasingly critical for societies striving to enhance their sustainability and resilience. This paper examines how agricultural extension—viewed through contemporary lenses as a mechanism for innovation linkage—can contribute to the sector's sustainable development. A critical and objective analysis was conducted based on a review of scientific literature covering strategic commodities such as vegetables, fruit crops, and agro-industrial crops in Panama and Peru. Key findings revealed common constraints facing both nations: i) A lack of genuine coordination among most sector stakeholders; ii) Difficulties regarding effective and timely communication; iii) A need to foster mutual respect among different specialties within transdisciplinary teams; iv) Limited integration of traditional (ancestral) knowledge with STI; v) Limited availability of the materials and inputs required for effective on-farm innovation; and vi) A need to strengthen dynamic andragogical processes within technology transfer initiatives. Considering these challenges, the paper reaffirms the strategic importance of agricultural extension as a driver of innovation, facilitated through authentic, objective, and purposeful engagement. Ultimately, it is essential that each nation's sustainable development policies genuinely address these challenges, viewing them as opportunities for improvement in the pursuit of sustainable development.
