The primary objective of this research is to propose the use of struts as a solution for partition or retaining walls at risk of collapse, particularly in locations with established property boundaries in the province of Panama Oeste. The study focuses on perimeter walls threatened by increased stormwater runoff or proximity to bodies of water, factors linked to residential expansion in the province that can compromise structural stability, thereby creating a geotechnical issue. The aim is to propose reinforced walls with timber or steel struts for situations involving construction near culverts, pipelines, or streams. To justify this proposal, a load analysis is conducted assuming a stiff clay backfill with specific geotechnical properties (unit weight, cohesion, and angle of internal friction); the wall is evaluated and statics is used to calculate the force acting on the strut, subsequently designing the strut based on the principles of strength of materials, a key subject in the Building and Infrastructure Engineering curriculum. The study concludes with a proposal utilizing an 8-inch diameter ASTM A500 steel pipe.
