Solid waste is all that is discarded and can easily decompose, being of animal, plant, and even inorganic origin. The human beings, main generators, represent a threat to the environment since to satisfy their needs they have increased the production of inputs, giving results of new production systems and technologies. In the Community of Portobelo tourist site of the Province of Colon, patterns of consumption of products are manifested, mainly those of disposable character such as paper, tin, among others. Dispersed or poorly disposed waste is not observed in the community evidencing a certain collection frequency. However, those that can be subjected to processes for reuse are observed reducing their accumulation in the already collapsed landfills or with the possibility of offering economic, ecological, and cultural benefits to the place. In the last five years, the collection of solid waste was affected, and the local authorities offered the service to avoid effects such as vermin breeding sites and alteration of the landscape due to poor disposal without a definitive solution. The purpose of the study is to point out basic aspects of the current management and disposal of solid waste as a starting point for an environmental proposal. Surveys and interviews instruments were applied to reveal the level of knowledge of residents about management and use of solid waste. The results served to develop an environmental proposal aimed at promoting changes in attitudes, promoting a cleaner and more sustainable community, improving the final disposal and use of solid waste.
