This paper addressed the origins of materialist philosophy, specifically the birth and development of materialist philosophy in ancient times. The first point to be discussed was a conceptual delimitation about the concept and scope of materialism as a philosophical position or approach. For this, the positions of various philosophers on the matter were analyzed. In the same way, a delimitation was made about the concept of ancient age. Subsequently, the approaches of the main philosophers and philosophical schools that maintained materialist ideas during the ancient age were detailed. The main research method used was the historical analytical-synthetic type. Among the conditions to which the article arrives, it follows that materialist philosophical approaches have existed for more than two thousand years within human thought. That these materialistic ideas have evolved over the years. Nowadays, the various materialistic philosophical positions are placed among those that have the most adherents today.
