At the global level, the volume of solid waste shows an exponential increase, as part of the consumer culture of human society. The Centro Regional Universitario de Colón (CRUColón) de la Universidad de Panamá with a population of administrators, professors and students, generates a significant volume of solid waste as a result of the activities carried out there; which suggests a possible scenario of environmental contamination and an opportunity to promote recycling to mitigate it. Considering that the economic factor is vital in the decision-making, especially in the ecological ones, the objective was to develop a sustainable management strategy based on solid waste in the CRUColón during the first semester of 2016. To this end, the following were carried out: stages: a. Dissemination of the work plan, b. identification of waste collection areas, c. classification according to the type of waste, d. Market study to locate local buyers, e. Approach to the marketing strategy. As a result of the proposal, the organization of interest groups was motivated and operative plans were developed for a possible execution of projects, creation of purchasers' database, which demonstrates that a sustainable strategy can be established for economic and environmental benefits.
