Youth unemployment is a significant problem for the Panamanian economy because it has been growing in recent years even though economic activity has been one of the strongest in the region. The State has tried to correct this problem through public programs that help young people enter the workforce. The objective is to characterize youth unemployment, the young labor market and public employment programs. The methodology used is of a documentary type, with a descriptive level and bibliographic design that allowed us to delve deeper into the topic. The technique was documentary, documents and databases were explored, among the most notable publications of international organizations of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank (WB), International Labor Organization (ILO), Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), from the national level in the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses of Panama (INEC) and the website of the Ministry of Labor and Social Development (MITRADEL). All this combined with an active search for other cited bibliographic sources. The sample covers resources published from 2013 to the present. The results suggest that there is a disconnection of the educational system from labor demand, young people face integration problems and public employment programs do not correct these failures.
