Abstract

Plastic is the main raw material used in the manufacture of toys, which in turn has contributed to research, development and innovation (R&D&I) in this sector. However, scientific advances have revealed the complications for human health and the environment derived from the use of certain plastic materials; which forces well-known companies in the toy industry, in order to remain updated, to take on challenges in terms of efficient and environmentally friendly processes, environmental regulations and production goals that use non-polluting materials (recycled, recyclable or biodegradable). The aim of this work was to develop a systematic review on how the principle of the four Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle and refuse) manages to be implemented by the main manufacturers, while highlighting the present and future challenges in this industry. To do this, 36 references related to the topic were consulted. The main conclusions are that the four Rs are applicable in the toy industry, through technological innovations oriented towards responsible consumption, environmental mitigation and community development, but important challenges persist in terms of sustainability.
