Abstract

The aim of this research was to demonstrate the impact of the 15-week cognitive-behavioral therapy course on the intensity of social anxiety in participating university students. The research used a quasi-experimental design of the pretest-posttest type with an experimental group of 76 fourth-year students of the day shift and 31 third-year students of the night shift, who formed the control group, with a follow-up of three and a half months. The Anxiety and Social Phobia Inventory of the researchers Turner, Beidel, Dancu and Stanley (SPAI) (1989) was used to assess the impact of the course on the levels of total anxiety. The results indicate that, at the end of the course, in the t student test, the students of the experimental group decreased the intensity of their total anxiety to a degree of 0.05 of significance, and maintained that decrease during follow-up. The pretest also revealed that 26% of the students in the experimental group could be affected by social anxiety syndrome. That percentage dropped to 20% in the post-test, which justifies the implementation of prevention and intervention programs throughout the training of the future psychologists.
