The concern for quality in health care is as old as medical practice itself. It is a strategic element underlying the transformation and improvement of modern health systems. For over 20 years, the need to maintain or increase the quality of health care while controlling costs has led to great interes and activity to improve the assessment of the quality and performance. Today, the United States spends more money on health care (14 % of the gross domestic product) than in education and defense combined. In this review, we will discuss the concept of quality in health care, the dimensions of quality management applied to health services, and how to measure it.
