Abstract

Primary malignant tracheal tumors are rare, representing between 0.02 and 0.04% of all malignant tumors in adults. 90% of all tumors of the trachea are malignant. Of these, adenoid cystic carcinoma is the second most common, with 10 to 15% of cases. Its clinical manifestations are nonspecific and are mainly secondary to obstruction of the airway and compression of adjacent structures. Because of that and its extremely rare frequency, it is often misdiagnosed and confused with other pulmonary pathologies; such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other malignancies.

We report a case of a 49 years old female patient with recurrent lower respiratory tract infections and wheezing, in which, after appropriate studies, the diagnosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma of trachea was established.
