Scientific journals have become fundamental communication tools for development of any knowledge field; therefore, their quality and evaluation ensure the information they contain. Evaluation of quality of journals at University of Panama has been studied in a few works. In order to generate an inventory and classify the scientific journals of the University of Panama, a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted between June 2017 and January 2018. Study subjects were university scientific journals; it was decided to make a generalized search in all available specialized sites, emphasizing four aspects: Inventory, Formality, Scientific Content and Scientific Imprint. Data were recorded in Excel sheets and descriptive statistics were applied for comparisons. 23 journals were counted, of which 14 remain current and productive to date. 82.60% of the journals meet the criteria of Scientific Quality, which includes instructions to authors and constituted Editorial and Scientific Committees; they also adhere to an editorial flow with external evaluation by blind peers and an article selection system according to the editorial standards for indexed scientific journals. Most of the university journals are multidisciplinary with constant production. The visibility of these journals is worrisome, since only three are indexed in at least one recognized evaluator database; Latindex and MIAR being the ones with the highest number of journals; while the WoK and SciVerse Scopus platforms do not register journals of the University of Panama. It is concluded that standardization of journals should be encouraged through institutional efforts that involve training, follow-up and economic support; and with this, contribute to their better indexation and visibility. It must be a joint effort, in which the visibility of all journals improves in parallel without unnecessary internal competences.
