In Azuero, Panama, there is a drought that compromises water sustainability. The comprehensive management of water resources is crucial to address this problem. This project focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of coconut endocarp as a mitigator of evaporation in dammed water sources in La Villa de Los Santos.
The study will be carried out in three swimming pools: one covered with an endocarp and two without (one exposed to the sun and one in the shade). The percentage of evaporation will be measured by recording the volumes of water every ten days. Preliminary results show that the pool with endocarp presents an average evaporation of 2.54 % in the sun, compared to 10.23 % in the pool without endocarp exposed to the sun and 2.9 % in the one in the shade. These data suggest that coconut endocarp may be effective in reducing water loss through evaporation. This experimental approach seeks to simulate real conditions and demonstrate the usefulness of the endocarp in water conservation. The research will not only contribute to water sustainability in Azuero but could also offer an innovative solution to mitigate the effects of drought in the region, thus promoting more efficient management of this vital resource.
