Abstract

The pandemic caused by COVID19 posed widespread challenges on how to economically and financially face a major health crisis in an environment of an already weakened global economy that was expected to be heading towards an international recession. In this context, some countries faced the challenge better than others and thus placed themselves in a good position for post-pandemic economic recovery.

The objective of this research is to analyze how the economic performance of the Republic of Panama was during the 2020 crisis and the beginning of the recovery in 2021, including a review of the fiscal management in this period, so that it is possible to have a vision of what the economic and fiscal perspectives would be in a period from 2020 to 2025.

The official statistics of the Republic of Panama as well as those of the main multilateral organizations such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, which are presented in this investigation, allow us to observe, that despite the fact that our country had historically been characterized by relatively successful handling of internal crises such as the one caused by the United States invasion of Panama in 1989 or of a global type such as the international financial crisis of 2008-2009, on this occasion we are characterized by having one of the worst performances during the pandemic, affecting, as usually happens in these cases, the most humble sectors of the population who are still seeing their chances of generating income through decent jobs to satisfy their family needs affected.
