This literature review article focuses on the role of the principal as the leader in the pedagogical function within an educational setting. It examines the skills and attributes necessary for effective performance of their duties in leading and directing pedagogical processes that guide teachers in the implementation of practices that generate a positive impact on education.
The intention of the article is to provide a generalized view of the importance and impact of the pedagogical function of the school principal, from the considerations of different authors. To do this, we turn to the literature review that was carried out through a search in academic databases. Studies were selected that addressed the pedagogical functions inherent to a principal, published between 2010 and 2023. The studies were analyzed systematically, identifying the main trends and findings.
In the literature review, a convergence was found among the authors around the role of the school principal as a key factor in the transformation of the school. The authors agree that the school principal, as a pedagogical leader, must have the necessary competencies to lead educational change and achieve a significant impact on student learning, an essential goal of every educational institution.
