Abstract

Social vulnerability as a concept has been addressed from innumerable fields of study, by virtue of the plurality of elements that make it up, and it is one of the most current topics today if it is approached from a gender perspective, given the constant challenges that the world faces due to climate changes; Roughly speaking, it can be defined as “the characteristics of a person or group and their situation that influence their ability to anticipate, deal with, resist, and recover from the impact of a threat.” (Wisner, et al., 2004, 11). Now, when looking at Panama, one can see that the inequality indices are high, as narrated by De la Cruz (2020), for an article presented on TVN, which refers to the document presented by the Program of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), called “Impact of COVID-19 in Panama: socioeconomic analysis”, in which “structural weaknesses that affect the development opportunities of people according to their life cycle, gender, , ethnicity, socioeconomic level and particular conditions such as: disability, immigration status and protection needs, among others.” By virtue of this, in the current article, a documentary, descriptive and exploratory study is proposed, which outlines the analysis of social vulnerability by gender in Panama in the face of potential risks to climate change, with the purpose to describe the most salient elements at a social level, which allow us to propose premises for subsequent in-depth studies, given the relevance of the topic based on the social inequalities existing in the country, and that allow the financing of projects of social interest.
