Abstract

This article presents the analysis of the work Panama’s Cry, where a posthumous lyrical tribute is made to the governor Don Enrique Enríquez Sotomayor. This collection of poems exalts the life of this man, who is considered one of the most emblematic figures in our history during the 17th century. The purpose of this research is to know what is the linguistic and literary significance of Panama’s Cry for Panamanian letters. In this way, this article can be classified as a research that contemplates different methods for its study, among them: qualitative, documentary, linguistic, historical and literary. The results show that a discourse can be approached from different perspectives, taking into consideration not only the characters in the work, but also the type of language that is used and that gives a global meaning to the text. It is concluded that this work has a historical value for Panamanian literature, since it is a compilation of funeral poems by some Spanish and Creole poets born in Panama.
