Abstract

with the objective of determine the diversity of orchid bees in the Azuero Peninsula, different sites from the provinces of Herrera and Los Santos were sampled from 2006 to 2015. The bees were attracted and captured manually using artificial chemical compound as oil eucalyptus, clove oil, methyl salicylate, vanilla and lavender; were also captured with six McPhail traps, using eucalyptus oil, placing three traps in the canopy and three traps in the understory exposed between 6:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. A total of 558 individuals belonging to 4 genera present in Panama, with a total of 18 species, constituting 9% of the total species recorded for the Neotropics (207 species), and 28% of the total species reported for Panama (65 species). These results indicate that due to the continuous expansion of territory for agriculture and livestock, the orchid bees have had to take refuge in the remaining redoubts of the Azuero Peninsula, with the drastic reduction of their populations.
