Abstract

Most of the mangroves on the Caribbean coast of Colon province are characterized by the abundance of the red mangrove, which is the dominant species of those areas. The present work aimed to determine the structural characteristics of the red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) on Payardi island, Pilon port, Colon province. The study consisted in the achievement of 32 transepts of 50 x 2.0 m between the months of January 2010 to June 2011. The presence of red mangrove (R. mangle), black mangrove (Avicennia germinans), white mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa) was determined and gray mangrove (Conocarpus erectus). The most abundant species in the study area was the white mangrove (L. racemosa) with 52 %, followed by the red mangrove (R. mangle) with 41 %. The red mangrove presented a low percentage of trees bigger than 20 cm and a high percentage of young trees below 20 cm of diameter at soil height when compared to the other species in that area. The red mangrove (R. mangle) obtained an average height of 11.6 m and an average diameter at soil height of 18.1 cm which suggest that the study area still on regeneration.
