Computer science education has faced challenges stemming from the abstract nature of concepts such as artificial intelligence (AI), human-computer interaction, and computer graphics. This study evaluated the effectiveness of an open-source educational simulator called AI-CodeCraft, designed to foster active and personalized learning. A quasi-experimental design was used with 45 students divided into an experimental group (n = 30) and a control group (n = 15) during three weeks of practical sessions. The results indicated that the experimental group improved their academic performance by 22%, compared to 8% in the control group (t = 3.27; p < 0.01). Furthermore, 78% of participants reported increased motivation, and 91% positively valued adaptive feedback. Limitations related to the hardware requirements and the simulator's learning curve were identified. These findings suggested that artificial intelligence (AI)-based educational simulators and simulation as an educational technology strategy can enhance conceptual understanding and student motivation, although their generalization depends on the available technological infrastructure and the duration of the intervention.
