This article includes a reflection on the teaching competences issue, which is widely discussed by all of the social sectors and currently seen as an urgent and unavoidable need. The work is based on the contributions of several authors who have thoroughly researched this topic, considering Miguel Ángel Zabalza as main reference. In it, we describe the three scenarios in which the teaching role is immersed: the institutional setting, the knowledge and the work of the professor itself. These contexts have been transformed in recent decades, precisely, by the influences of a variety of factors being of greatest importance the situation of global markets, the socio-cultural changes, the environmental issues and the rapid technological advances. This changing situation requires academic institutions to return to warring and more active positions in this current system to make sure the faculty’s work is led along with current needs and problems of our society. From a reflexive position, based on my classroom experience, the professor’s competences are addressed exclusively by taking into account those viewed as fundamental by Miguel Angel Zabalza that help to comply the university teaching labor with effectiveness, quality and itills, significant learning, social needs.
