J.L. Austin is one of the most important thinkers in the history of 20th century philosophy. His reflections on language and truth had a great influence. But in addition to being a philosopher, Austin was a man of his time, exposed to tragic and demanding human situations, who had to serve as an intelligence officer during World War II.
