Abstract

J.L. Austin is one of the most important thinkers in the history of 20th century philosophy. His reflections on language and truth had a great influence. But in addition to being a philosopher, Austin was a man of his time, exposed to tragic and demanding human situations, who had to serve as an intelligence officer during World War II. This facet is very little known and is part of the virtue of Rowe's book.
