Abstract

English hegemony has affected translation into Spanish as well as into other languages in international relations. Despite international agreements sponsored by the UN such as the Vienna Treaty on the law of treaties, power related issues affect relations between countries. The situation of the Torrijos -Carter treaty exemplifies this political and linguistic asymmetry. This article discusses how the predominance of English over other languages causes distortions in international relations today, and how treaties and other agreements should be renegotiated on equal terms, including their translations.
