Abstract

Within the private haven of every home where a dependent person lives, a valuable person´s dedication often goes unnoticed, the caregiver. This article aims to analyze the existence of caregiver burden, a condition characterized by physical and emotional exhaustion that affects the quality of life, well-being, and health of caregivers in the short and long term (Martínez Pizarro, S., 2020). The objective was to analyze the existence of burden among family members of hospitalized geriatric patients. Using a quantitative, descriptive methodology, a sample of 25 primary caregivers was selected based on their active participation in caregiving tasks. The theoretical framework was grounded in Kristen M. Swanson’s Theory of Caring. The results showed that 68% of the participants presented some degree of burden, either mild or severe, and 60% reported frequent difficulties in self-care. Additionally, 44% of the participants reported emotional burden, while 12% did not comply with their annual health check-ups. These findings highlight the significant impact of the role of caregivers on the physical and emotional health of relatives, highlighting symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia, stress, physical discomfort, and neglect of self-care. It is concluded that specific support interventions for caregivers are necessary to reduce their burden and improve their quality of life.
