he approval of women's suffrage in the Second Republic (1931-1936) constituted an unprecedented milestone in the struggle for women's political and legal rights in Spain. The research that forms the basis of this article aimed to analyze the process of legitimizing women's suffrage, from the constitutional debates of 1931 to its initial realization in the 1933 elections. From a qualitative methodology perspective, the primary sources (speeches) were critically reviewed, as well as the historiography with some specialization in the context and, in particular, regarding the struggle of Spanish women for suffrage. The various positions that emerged from the parliamentary debate and their relationship to civic education were examined, taking into account elements of historical theory and hermeneutics, as well as the historical and social context of the period. The analysis yielded important results: a) the approval of Article 36 of the Constitution was made possible by intense parliamentary negotiations and the firm stance of the suffragettes; b) the contradictions within the essentially democratic republican regime itself, manifested in the reluctance towards the full political integration of women; and c) the questioning of the legitimacy of the right to vote following the results of the 1933 elections. It is concluded that the approval of women's suffrage was accompanied by profound contradictions and controversies within the civic sphere, evidence of the resistance to the full integration of women into political activity as full citizens. The recognition of women's suffrage placed Spain among the most advanced countries of the time in legislative matters, while simultaneously demonstrating the fragility of the political process of civic education and development.
