Abstract

Motivation towards scientific research is a determining element in strengthening the academic and professional competencies of university students; however, in the Regional University Center of Panama Oeste there are still limitations that affect their active participation in research processes. Faced with this problem, a study was developed aimed at analyzing the internal and external factors that influence student motivation to research, considering as essential criteria educational relevance, teaching accompaniment, accessibility to resources and strengthening research skills. A mixed approach was used, with a descriptive scope and cross-sectional design. The information was collected through the application of a questionnaire to 352 students from the Regional University Center of Panama West and the realization of 3 focus groups students from different faculties of the Regional University Center of Panama West. The results showed a positive perception of the importance of research for professional development, highlighting academic recognition, teacher guidance and interest in exploring one's own topics as the main motivational factors. However, barriers related to lack of time, insufficient technological resources and poor methodological training were also identified. The analysis made it possible to propose strategies for strengthening research based on the creation of seedbeds, practical workshops, academic consultancies and a greater integration of research into the university curriculum. It is concluded that there is a willingness for students to participate in scientific activities, but it is essential to consolidate an institutional culture that encourages research from early stages, promotes the ethical use of digital tools and guarantees sustainable opportunities for research development.
