Abstract

This article presents some considerations about the teaching of English as a Second Language (ESL) specifically in public schools in Panama. Here we present, in a summary form, some of these considerations since being aware of them allows us to seek and join efforts to improve the quality of the teaching of the English language.  Generally, when teaching English in elementary and high public schools there is the belief that teachers are doing much more emphasis on the teaching of sub-skills than on skills: especially grammar. Therefore, many students graduate and try to look for a job or apply for international scholarships, but they fail because when they go through an interview process that requires oral communication skills, they cannot do it.
