The relationship between the onion´s import and the national production of the item in the period 2000 - 2016 was evaluated. The analysis was made from secondary sources (MIDA technical reports). The variables used in the study were: region, the number of producers, production in quintals, volume/ha, and sown and harvested area—the data described through measures of central tendency and variability. The interaction between the variables was also established using Principal Components Analysis, and the highest incidence of production was identified. The results showed a reduction in output and an increase in the volume and value of imports. They increased the performance of producers in the study period. Likewise, the negative impact of the volume of imports on the number of producers could be verified.
