Abstract

The production of organic fertilizers through the composting process allows agricultural waste that would otherwise become pollutants. However, its use in preparing seedlings and organic fertilization is limited due to the presence of phytotoxic substances associated with the maturation period of the product. The industry for the production of organic fertilizers in Panama is recent and needed evaluations to determine its quality; the researchers propose using the phytotoxicity test on lettuce seeds to assess the composting maturation and determine its safe use in the organic fertilization of crops and seedlings. The results indicated that the organic fertilizer T1 did not show phytotoxicity evidence when applied to the seeds of cucumber (Cucumis sativus) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa), in comparison with the other fertilizers used. Lettuce seeds showed greater sensitivity to the use of different organic fertilizers, being ideal as a bioindicator in the phytotoxicity tests of germination bioassays.
