Abstract

The objective of this paper was to recognize the fruit species, with potential as functional foods, predominant in Cerro Punta, Chiriqui - Panama. Field trips were carried out from January to April 2021, keeping a photographic record of the specie’s growth habits, flowers, and fruits found in wild vegetation and cultivated areas. In addition, to illustrate the nutritional properties of the fruits found, specialized literature was consulted. Identified 11 families, 18 genders, and 31 plant species; the Rosaceae family is the most diverse with six genders and 11 species, followed by the Rutaceae family with six species of the Citrus gender and the Solanaceae family with two genders and three species. Although several of the fruit trees found are cultivate, the strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) is the primary fruit produced in Cerro Punta, marketed to the national level for fresh consumption and minimal food processing. Wild brambles, tomato tree, cape gooseberry, guava, citrus fruits, and papaya’s mountain area are used for the handcrafted elaboration of jams, drinks, and desserts. Cerro Punta has a diversity of exotic fruits that represent potential as functional foods, contributing to the development of sustainable regional fruit growing due to their nutritional qualities. However, further promotion and dissemination on this matter are required.
