Abstract

The current proposal aims to generate an analytical program for the Scientific English course in Geological Engineering (B.E.) at the University of Panama allowing students to develop intermediate linguistic competencies based in the Common European Framework of Reference for languages, subject to relevant topics for the students taking English for Specific Purpose classes in the area of ??geology. First, external programs are examined using convergence and discard in the selection of content and strategies relevant to the Panamanian context. Next, using a non-probability sampling considering the low enrollment, a Likert scale instrument is applied to the total number of active students to measure the perception-acceptance of the topics to be included in the program. Subsequently, the analytical program is designed with the collected data. In addition to the analytical program, the proposal shows the low interest of students in basic extents such as reading scientific articles in their area of study and a need to increase the number of English courses and increase the contact hours (credits) to successfully develop the linguistic competencies expected in the career learning outcomes.
