Abstract

The purpose of this study is to establish whether the third set of locks on the Panama Canal has meant a change in the logistics services it provides and the performance indicators. To achieve the stated purpose, some other specific ones are needed, such as: describing the behavior of ship traffic, establishing the patterns of variation of maritime cargo, examining the behavior of toll revenues in the study period, analyzing the source of growth. of the toll revenue and establish the modifications of the KPIs. For this purpose, the Cobb-Douglas model, multiple regression, inferential and descriptive statistics have been used. The results achieved indicate that, in effect, investments in capital improvements have led to a technological change. However, the source of tolls is mainly the increase in toll rates and, to a lesser extent, the increase in the freight transported. Finally, the company's KPIs, verified over time, show mixed results. The study is novel given the low literary production on the subject and contributes to appreciate the effects of the investments applied in this important infrastructure of international trade.
