Abstract

The use of virtual classes on the teaching-learning process of the English Language during the COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to this research at CRUPO.

This quantitative-descriptive study was conducted in the Western Academic Unit of the University of Panamá. The goal is to identify the impact of virtual classes on learning the English language in time of the total shutdown of the University of Panama for the COVID-19 virus. The sample was chosen for convenience and the Google Form platform was utilized to create and send the survey to the sample. Media means were used to apply the survey based on the Likert scale for collecting and analyzing the data. Some factors that limited the English language's learning process during the pandemic were identified. They are the poor internet service, the sharing of the technological device with other family members, the limited technological preparation on the part of the students, and the moderate relationship among students and between students and professors. As a result, the impact of virtual classes on the English language learning process was moderate and limited. However, the data shows that on-campus classes are relevant for students. Other deeper studies should be accomplished to determine soft skills’ influence on the virtual environment.
