It is notable that the interest in adventure tourism has been growing, with more and more people seeking natural spaces to enjoy their free time; this phenomenon entails a responsibility on the part of the institutions to guarantee the safety of tourists during the practice. For this reason, it is necessary to identify the risks and threats that tourists may face in the practice of adventure tourism from the perspective of those who practice the activity, those who offer tourism services, and the institutions that guarantee the protection of tourists. This study was based on a mixed qualitative-descriptive and quantitative method. The results show that tourists have the perception that tourism safety is a task of government institutions, and consequently, they neglect important aspects of their safety, are unaware of the latent risks and are not prepared to face an emergency. It is concluded that tourism safety in adventure tourism is a challenge specifically regarding tourist awareness of the need for specialized guides and, on the other hand, the implementation of effective strategies to control tourist access to protected areas, since not all current measures provide adequate control to guarantee tourist protection.
