Abstract

In this research, summarizing was analyzed as an appropriate strategy to facilitate the interpretation of different types of texts.  In terms of methodology, it can be classified as mixed, because both qualitative and quantitative aspects were considered in its development. Furthermore, it is important to note that, to identify the difficulties faced by ninth-grade students in summarizing texts, a pretest based on a reading related to the subject of World History was administered. This contained various types of questions: literal, inferential, and application questions. The fundamental purpose of this research was to diagnose the difficulties faced by ninth-grade students at the Moisés Castillo Ocaña School in the province of West Panama in summarizing texts. During the course of this study, it was found that summarizing is a tool that increases reading comprehension, as it is a resource widely used by schoolchildren, helping them to identify the main topic or ideas in a text, but also allowing them to construct or develop new meanings from what they have read.  The results obtained showed that schoolchildren require a series of skills and competencies to apply strategies that help them recognize the information that appears literally, make inferences and predictions, and summarize the text. The use of summaries in the teaching-learning process is recommended, as they become a fundamental tool for working on reading comprehension and acquiring new knowledge during school and professional life.
