Abstract

The objective of this study was to survey the anurans of the old-growth forests in the traditional Emberá territory, Tierras Colectivas del Rio Balsas, in Darién, Panama. Diurnal and early evening sampling was conducted in the Rio Balsas watershed in 2019 and 2022. Sampling consisted of: a) opportunistic visual encounter observations in the surroundings of three communities and three additional sites (< 5 km); b) seven 1 km transects subdivided into 100 m sections. Anuran diversity recorded was 19 species belonging to 9 families and 14 genera. The most abundant species found were Craugastor fitzingeri, Rhinella alata and Dendrobates auratus. These three species accounted for 53% of the 215 individuals recorded. The diurnal anuran community is well represented in this study as the majority of sampling was done during the day. Further sampling in this area is warranted to fully describe the amphibian diversity. Our study provides a baseline for understanding the frog and toad species in an intact forest.
