Abstract

n the early 1990s, the majority of female confinements, of the different penitentiaries and social rehabilitation centers in Latin America were examined. As outstanding results, the lack of exclusive centers for women is underlined, with the exception of a few so-called “social rehabilitation”, which creates many disadvantages for them, because demands, spaces, services and care are always prioritized Men, and women, are postponed indefinitely. Other studies in this region show that the number of women has grown three times more than that of men, in the period 1994-2004. Likewise, the stories of poor women, with sons and daughters and mostly prisoners against health and drug offenses, which is increasing every time, are repeated. A study in Mexico shows a particular reality, stating that the majority of women who purge sentences in prisons should not be there, because they are non-dangerous people who were generally dragged by their partners to commit the crimes. In Latin America drug-related crimes have been increasing to become the first cause for women being in prison, unlike what happens among men. This investigation, like several authors, agrees that female criminal behavior is different from that of men: women who primarily violate drug law are less violent, less repeat offenders and start their criminal career late. However, the authors consulted say that women enter the prison system frequently due to drug trafficking, figures that are increasing, which is observed in different countries: Mexico, Argentina, Panama and the United States, among others.
