Abstract

            Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is one of the most important industrial crops in Panama. Biotechnology in sugarcane is a field that is just beginning its development in the country. Considering a series of limitations for production that includes dry areas, pests, diseases, weeds just to mention a few. The new biotechnological tools could represent the solution for many of these limitations in Panama.¿What is the current scenario and what are the elements of biotechnology that the panamanian sugarcane industry would be focused on developing to increase its production. This paper overview focused on current biotechnology applied to sugarcane in Panama, its limitations and prospects.
