Abstract

Alzheimer's is one of the leading causes of disability, dependence, and mortality in the elderly population worldwide. Due to the progression of the disease, the autonomy of the patient decreases; therefore, more attention is required from others to cover the patient's needs; becoming the primary caregiver the one who has most of the time to help the patient, because of the high demands and extended care, caregivers may experience levels of overload and disturbance in a variety of different environments. This research aims to provide a detailed description of the overload of caregivers of Alzheimer's patients as well as its impact on their physical, psychological health, and quality of life. A bibliographic review of scientific articles corresponding to the years 2015-2020 was carried out, thus guaranteeing updated evidence; fifty-three articles were selected, out of them, finally, forty-three eligible were included according to the inclusion criteria. The obtained results reflect evidence of the association between overload, disease factors, and the appearance of complications in the physical and psychological health and quality of life of the caregivers. Professional and social knowledge of this problem is essential, allowing the implementation and improvement of prevention and intervention programs for these professionals from a bio-psycho-social perspective.
