Abstract

Observations of the common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) obtained in mangroves and remnants of main land forests are reported in areas near the Gulf of Chiriquí, Republic of Panama. Bats were captured in September 2016, also in March and July 2017, for which fog nets 2.5 m high by 12 m long were used. Records of 143 specimens were obtained, 79 of them captured in the mangroves and 64 in the forest remnants. In the mangroves 35 females and 44 males were captured, while in the forest remnants 23 females and 41 males were obtained, for a total of 85 males and 58 females during the entire work. Among 25 registered bat species, D. rotundus was the second most abundant species in the sample (17.43%). The highest activity of D. rotundus in the area was observed between 21h:00 and 10h:00 (44.05% of the captures), decrease towards midnight. Greater evidence of reproductive activity was observed during the rainy season, with pregnant, lactating and ablactating females in the months of July and September. 87% of the captured males had testicles in scrotal position, with a higher number during the rainy season.
