Abstract

The Protected Landscape of Punta Galeta (PPPG), located in the province of Colón, Panama, houses a high diversity of plants and animals of interest for conservation. The presence of Crocodylus acutus, threatened species (EN) by National Law, has been reported in this area. Between the months of August to November of the year 2012 and July to October of 2014, the abundance and distribution of this reptile was estimated in a forest fragment of PPPG; 12 nocturnal visual counts were performed; all visits lasted one night; describing four age classes by size: neonates (<30cm), juveniles (<90cm), subadults (90 to 180cm) and adults (> 180cm). An average relative abundance for the species of 0.59 ind / km was obtained with a range of (0.55 to 0.63). C. acutus is distributed throughout the study area; with a representation of the four sizes in the channels and mangrove area.

The forest fragment studied shows great potential for the conservation of the crocodile needle.
