Abstract

Antimicrobials are widely used for their pharmacological properties in a number of infectious diseases. Antimicrobial resistance may appear during its use, which makes it necessary to establish control programs for its use. The results of these programs need to be complemented with utilization studies to know their behavior and assess the required measures. The research aims to evaluate the use of antimicrobials in the insured population in Panama. An observational, descriptive, retrospective and longitudinal study of antimicrobials was carried out in the executing units located in the ten (10) provinces of the country, during the period from 2015 to 2018. The sample was of convenience in which beta-lactam antimicrobials were selected. and quinolones using the existing records of the institution's databases. The methodology anatomical-chemical-therapeutic classification (ATC) and defined daily dose (DDD) of each antimicrobial studied was applied. The results reveal that the distribution and use scheme of the antimicrobials available in the institution is defined according to the levels of complexity of the executing unit, which defines their use. From the group of beta-lactams, Amoxicillin 500mg obtained a daily dose defined by insured population (DHD) of 1.66 and the DHD of Amoxicillin 250mg/5ml, powder for oral suspension, was DHD of 30.25, much higher than the Internationally established DDD. The opposite was observed for parenteral antipseudomonal penicillin, with a DHD of 0.02 well below the established DDD. Of the Quinolones group, Ciprofloxacin 500mg, for oral use, was the most used with 1.87 DHD. It is concluded that most of the antimicrobials studied obtained levels of DHD below the DDD established at the international level.
