Abstract

The general objective of this research was to analyze how the increase in the informal economy affects the economic development of the District of Chitre, Province of Herrera. The Informal economy occurs due to the lack of employment, which leads people to have other alternatives such as to carry out different informal activities. Many people work informally in economic activities from their homes which are often unknown by the authorities. The study was descriptive and cross-sectional in order to obtain information that would allow knowing the level of informality in the district. The studied population represented the number of seventy-two (72) workers who carry out this activity. The sample corresponded to the number of (61) people and was randomly selected. Regarding the data collection technique, data from primary and secondary sources were used. The survey was applied with 17 categorized questions. Once the results were obtained, the causes of the increase in the informal economy in the District of Chitre were established and it was concluded that the main factors that affect the informal economy is the lack of a source of work and poor salary, migration to the city to improve the quality of life, families have little income to pay their expenses. So, they start working in informal activities to be able to partially satisfy their basic needs.
