Abstract

The use of wildlife has played a key role in social and economic development in various human populations. In Panama, this use has been little documented and validated as a component of Biodiversity. An ethnozoological study of wild vertebrates was carried out in the community of Quebrada Ancha, Colón, with the objective of evaluating the state of knowledge of vertebrate richness, uses and species of interest for conservation. The techniques that supported the study were: the Inventory of transepts, analysis of the human population and application of value-of-use index. The inhabitants surveyed in the community recognized 53 species of vertebrates (17 mammals, 25 birds and 11 reptiles); 26 of these species are used as food, handicrafts, subsistence hunting, pet, medicine and ornamentation. Iguana iguana, Cuniculus paca and Caiman crocodilus are the species that presented the highest use value. It is recommended to establish strategies for the management and conservation of these species in the study area.
