Benzodiazepines are a group of drugs that act on the Central Nervous System (CNS), with pharmacological effects of anxiolytic, hypnotic, anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant nature. The objective of the study is to evaluate the consumption of benzodiazepines in the facilities of the Social Security Fund (CSS) and the National Oncology Institute (ION).This is an observational, descriptive, retrospective and longitudinal study on the consumption of benzodiazepines, applying the ATC/DDD method and its analysis with respect to the DDD defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) to obtain the Inhabitant Daily Dose (IDD) of benzodiazepines in Panama. The most consumed benzodiazepines were Diazepam, Midazolam, Zolpidem, Alprazolam, Clonazepam and Loprazolam. Diazepam being the most consumed in the CSS and Alprazolam in the ION. Values of Inhabitant and Daily Dose (DHD) were obtained above those established by the WHO in both institutions. The evaluation of the reports of notifications of suspected adverse reactions (ADR) to benzodiazepines in the country were very few, however, some with serious sequelae. It is concluded that the consumption of benzodiazepines reflects a social problem in the country. One of the limitations of the study is that the evaluation of the clinical indications for the prescription of benzodiazepines was not incorporated.
