Abstract

This article presents the results of the systematic review of scientific publications derived from research and detailed reviews on the description of the role of school nurses in different countries.  For this purpose, publications of the Virtual Health Library were taken as bibliographic sources,  also  ProQuest databases, LILACS, Medline and bibliographic indexes such as Scielo, and  Redalyc;  The publications between the years 2006 to 2016, were taken into account.

Objective: Describe the role of school nurses, with emphasis on   the promotion of healthy lifestyles in educational centers, and the prevention of health risks factors.

The results include descriptions of the role of the school nurse and the activities done by this professional to promote the development of healthy lifestyles and the prevention of health risk factors in the context of the school environment in different countries of Europe, Unites States and Brazil.

Conclusion: After reviewing the existing literature on school nurses role, we have come to realize that it is not a new area of nursing, , it has a long history and has been implemented for some years in some European countries and in the United States. It is a nursing area that include activities for health promotion, for the prevention of health risk factors and for the direct attention of health alteration, also the determination and prevention of health complications of school children and adolescents.
