Abstract

Cypress (Cupressus lusitanica), is a conifer frequently used as an ornamental and living fence, among other uses; which is affected by the spruce mite, Oligonychus ununguis (Jacobi, 1905) (Acari: Tetranychidae), whose damage consists of deteriorating the foliage. In Tierras Altas, the main vegetable-producing area in Panama, it is common to find cypress close to crops, in addition to being used as a Christmas tree. Recently, affectations have been observed in the foliage of this plant, so the objective of this work was to identify the causal agent of said affectation in the area and to know the community of arthropods associated with cypress. To do this, seven locations were visited in the Tierras Altas District, where the damage was detected. Additionally, in Cerro Punta, 25 random arthropod samplings were carried out in living cypress fences near horticultural crops. Direct observation, photographic record and collection of foliage and specimens were carried out for their analysis at laboratory. As results, the causal agent of cypress foliage damage was O. ununguis and the arthropod community is represented by at least 27 taxa in Cerro Punta.
