Abstract

The rivers that flow into the Gulf of Montijo are in the area known as the buffer zone of the Coiba National Park. One of these rivers is the Mariato River, which throughout its course has various agricultural activities and populations that may be affecting the quality of its waters. Monitoring was carried out on this river between 2019 and 2020. To determine the quality of the last part of the river, the section located at the mouth was chosen. Five samplings were carried out in the rainy season and three in the dry season. The presence of total coliforms was determined by seeding in multiple tubes with CBVB and for fecal coliforms, the DEV technique was used on SIM agar at 44.5 °C incubation. The samples were also measured for pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, and total dissolved solids. The data were analyzed with the statistical program SPSS. The results were compared with the ranges established by COPANIT, and these showed low concentrations of dissolved oxygen and high values ??of dissolved solids. Total and fecal coliform counts remained within acceptable ranges. Higher values ??of total coliforms, dissolved oxygen and pH were detected in the rainy season. In the dry season, there were higher values ??of fecal coliforms, total dissolved solids, and temperature. The results show that the lower part of the mouth remains within the acceptable limits in the important parameters.
