Chronic diseases represented a growing challenge for health systems worldwide, including Panama, due to their high morbidity and economic impact. Nursing played a fundamental role in implementing strategies aimed at improving the quality of life of patients with chronic conditions and optimizing healthcare resources. The present study conducted a systematic literature review to analyze innovative care strategies reported in international scientific evidence and to examine their potential applicability within the Panamanian context.
Four strategic lines were addressed: comprehensive care models with a multidisciplinary approach, the use of technology and telenursing, patient education and empowerment, and evidence-based care practices. The findings demonstrated benefits such as the reduction of medical complications, improved treatment adherence, and strengthened clinical monitoring. However, a limited national scientific production in this area was identified, which restricted the specific analysis of local experiences.
It was concluded that the effective adoption of these strategies in Panama required strengthening nursing research, promoting continuous professional training, and fostering health policies focused on innovation and sustainability of care.
